Youth Alcohol Awareness
Alcohol AWARENESS in st helens
The alcohol awareness project is a collaborative piece working with young people from St Helens, commissioned by Citadel Arts (St Helens), Cultured (St Helens Cultural Education Partnership) and St Helens Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Team. This project is vital to the health of young people in St Helens given that recent data shows that the area has one of the highest rates of under 18 admissions to hospital linked to alcohol use.
The project is split into two phases. Phases 1 is working with a local drama group to devise a short film about the dangers of alcohol. Phase 2 is delivery into secondary schools through assemblies where the film will be screened alongside bespoke educational resources about alcohol.
The aim of this project is not only to show the dangers of alcohol but also to highlight what activities young people can do besides drinking and create a ‘new normal’ of non-drinking culture.
Phase 1
This phase included various sessions delivered by Attain Productions with a small drama group that meets weekly in St. Helens. Participants learned about the dangers of alcohol while exploring the various issues around it as it pertains to young people, and particularly young people in St Helens. Through this process the young people developed a script and storyboard exploring the issues that they felt were important to them around alcohol. The filming was completed in February 2020 in conjunction with Team Oasis Creative.

Phase 2
This phase is a set of resources which includes discussion of the themes brought up in the film. The resources discuss the long and short-term effects of alcohol, links to violence, intoxication, impaired decision making, increase of risky behaviours including unwanted or unprotected sex. These issues are also placed alongside a discussion about media portrayal of alcohol in movies, TV and music. The resources also explore the normalisation of alcohol within the culture and helps young people think about other choices that they can make.
