Charity film COMMISSION

Animal Free Research UK Commission

Working in conjunction with Animal Free Research UK (AFRUK) we have been working to create short films highlighting the innovative research projects they fund across the UK. The commission includes long versions of a case study of each research project, and a profile of the scientists conducting the research and why they think animal free research is the best way to get results for human relevant research. Each of these films is then shortened into a 1-minute promo film to be used on social media channels.

Event Filming and Photography

As part of this commission we also filmed Animal Free Research UK’s Studentship programme and gala to create another set of films to highlight the work that AFRUK are doing to get new researchers to go down the animal free research route. This coverage also included photography on the night of the gala.

Community documentary

A short documentary about hate crime in Barnet

This film was commissioned in Barnet from a working group set up to address hate crime. The brief was to create a short documentary exploring hate crime in the areas with the purpose of defining what a hate crime is and with the goal of getting the community to report these types of crimes in order to allocate proper resources to the issue.

The starting point for this documentary was in discussions with Barnet Mencap who were leading on the project. Through these discussions, we planned who should be interviewed for the film with the understanding that some people would be sharing their experiences of hate crime combined with professionals working with vulnerable groups discussing the challenges around hate crime.

Community collaborative documentary

A short film about Ealing’s work placement programme

Working in collaboration with a group of young people from Ealing Mencap we developed a short advertisement about work placements in Ealing for individuals with special needs. We held a number of workshops with group to teach them filmmaking skills and consult throughout the process. The young people helped script, storyboard, film and direct the editing process. The film has been used to help advertise what the work placement project is and the benefits for those who have been involved in it.

Youth documentary film

A youth-led documentary film about gang violence

This project was created in partnership with MAC UK working their young people to create a youth-led documentary exploring the issues around youth gang violence. The starting point for this process was working with two young people, Kia and Princess, who wanted to explore the issue of gang violence in Camden. Utilising their contacts as well as MAC UK, Kia and Princess created a list of people that they wanted to talk to about this issue. After initial discussions with Kia and Princess we began planning the film together, setting out storyboards and scripts. Both Kia and Princess learned about documentary making and acquired filming skills. They were interested in hosting as well as interviewing and learned these techniques throughout the filming process. They also learned how to shoot a professional standard camera and edit on Final Cut Pro.  The final edit was done in consultation with Kia and Princess to ensure the film was true to their vision. The film was presented at a Camden Town Hall at a conference on gang violence and community approaches to it.
